Why I Combine Body Gua Sha And Facial Gua Sha For The Best Results
When people think of facial treatments, they often focus only on the face itself. But over the years, one thing has become increasingly clear to me: the face does not exist in isolation from the rest of the body.
Tension in the neck, shoulders, chest and upper back can all influence the way the face looks and feels. This is one of the reasons I love combining body Gua Sha with facial Gua Sha in my treatments.
The results are often deeper, longer lasting and more holistic than working on the face alone.
What Is Gua Sha?
Gua Sha is an ancient East Asian treatment traditionally used on the body to improve circulation and move stagnation within the tissues. Facial Gua Sha is a gentler adaptation of this practice using carefully designed tools and slower, more refined techniques.
Whilst social media often presents Gua Sha as simply a “de puffing” trend, true Gua Sha is much more than that. It works with circulation, fascia, muscular tension and the nervous system.
For me, Gua Sha is not about aggressively scraping the skin or chasing temporary sculpting. It is about restoring healthy movement and flow within the tissues.
Why The Body Matters When Treating The Face
Many people carry enormous amounts of tension through the shoulders, neck and jaw without even realising it.
Long hours at desks, stress, clenching, shallow breathing and posture all affect the tissues surrounding the face. When these areas become tight, the face can appear heavier, puffier or more drawn.
This is why I often begin treatments working on the body first.
By releasing tension through the upper back, neck and shoulders before moving onto the face, the tissues soften more naturally and the face responds more beautifully.
Clients often notice that their jaw feels less tight, their breathing becomes deeper and their face appears brighter and more lifted.
The Fascia Connection
One of the most important reasons I combine body and facial Gua Sha is because of fascia.
Fascia is the connective tissue network that runs continuously throughout the entire body. It surrounds muscles, nerves, blood vessels and organs and plays a huge role in posture, tension and movement.
The fascia of the chest, neck and scalp is directly connected to the fascia of the face.
If there is restriction lower down in the body, it can influence the tissues higher up. This is why only treating the face can sometimes limit results.
Working on the body first creates more freedom within the fascial system as a whole. The face often softens and lifts more naturally afterwards because the surrounding structures are no longer pulling or restricting it in the same way.
Why Gua Sha Helps Puffiness
Both body and facial Gua Sha can help reduce puffiness, but not simply because they are “lymphatic drainage.”
As respected Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner Clive Witham explains, traditional Gua Sha is primarily about improving circulation and moving stagnation.
When circulation improves, tissues become healthier and fluid is less likely to sit stagnant within the face.
Facial Gua Sha can support lymphatic movement indirectly through improved tissue movement, circulation and reduced muscular tension, but it is not technically the same as a clinical Manual Lymphatic Drainage treatment.
This distinction is important because modern beauty culture often oversimplifies ancient practices.
The Nervous System Effect
One of the most powerful aspects of combining body and facial Gua Sha is the effect on the nervous system.
So many people today live in a constant state of stress and tension. This can show up physically through jaw clenching, headaches, tight shoulders, shallow breathing and inflammation within the skin.
Beginning with body Gua Sha helps the body shift into a more relaxed state before moving onto the face.
Clients often describe feeling deeply grounded during treatment, almost as though their whole body has exhaled.
When the nervous system relaxes, the face changes too. Muscles soften, circulation improves and the skin often looks healthier and more radiant.
Why I Believe Combination Treatments Create Better Results
For me, the best facial results come from treating the body and face together rather than viewing the face in isolation.
By combining body and facial Gua Sha, we can work more holistically with:
• posture
• fascia
• circulation
• muscular tension
• stress patterns
• nervous system regulation
• jaw and neck restriction
• puffiness and stagnation
The result is not just a temporary glow, but a face that looks healthier, softer and more balanced overall.
Beauty Meets Wellness
This is why my treatments are not purely cosmetic.
Whilst clients often notice sculpting, lifting and glow, the deeper goal is always to help the body move out of tension and into balance.
For me, beauty and wellness are deeply connected. The face reflects what is happening within the body, and when we support the body as a whole, the skin often responds naturally.
