Mushrooms – the secret to youthful skin!

One of my best tips for great skin and maintaining a healthy immune system is drinking a daily tonic of medicinal mushrooms. Mushrooms are part of the fungi kingdom and are more closely related to humans than to plants.

“The ability of mushroom polysaccharides to help restore healthy balance to the immune system, up-regulating immune responses in cases of immune suppression while down- regulating over active immune responses, is a direct consequence of their being natural compounds that our immune system has learned to recognise and respond to appropriately over millions of years and makes them a uniquely suitable for a wide range of chronic health conditions” Martin Powell.

Two most famous beauty mushrooms are Tremella & Chaga.
Tremella can hold 500 times its weight in water so is a fantastic skin plumper. Tremella may help maintain the production of hyaluronic acid, which normally declines with age. The function of hyaluronic acid in the body is, amongst other things, to bind water and to lubricate moveable parts in the body such as joints and muscles. It is also important in maintaining the suppleness and structure of the skin.

Chaga has the highest amount of antioxidants found in nature, which makes it an excellent anti-ageing tonic and the ORAC scale reveals that they contain even higher antioxidant levels than blueberries. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, chaga mushrooms are often recommended to people suffering with inflammatory disease, yeast and fungal infections and fatigue. In a Russian study of 50 psoriasis patients, 76% had a cure rate and 16% had a visible improvement from a daily tonic of chaga.

Both of these mushrooms can be enjoyed as a tasty tea but you can also use them directly on the skin as a mask.

My favourite mushroom brand is Hybrid Herbs, they use extracts so you only need 1/2 teaspoon a day. All products are vegan, 100% natural and contain no fillers. Just add hot water or add to your smoothie/coffee.
