Earthing

 <![CDATA[]]>

The Summer holidays are upon us and it’s time to lighten up, relax and make the most of longer days.

I always notice how much happier everyone is when the sun comes out (hopefully we will see it again this August). Generally it makes us more relaxed, and when we feel relaxed it shows in our attitude too. We might wear brighter colours, lighter clothing and perhaps less make-up, or maybe you wear a more natural, no make-up look.

Real relaxation can come from feeling grounded inside yourself. My favourite relaxation technique is very simple: I stand on the grass barefoot. This is called earthing or grounding, and it occurs when the body is in direct and uninterrupted contact with the earth. This means that skin needs to touch soil or sand. From a scientific perspective, the idea is that the earth has a mild negative charge to it. Over time, especially in modern life, our bodies build up a positive charge. Direct contact with the earth can even out this positive charge and return the body to a neutral state.

Many people don’t have this contact with the earth anymore, and some experts wonder if this is a contributor to the (many) rising health problems we face today. As a population, we wear shoes and live indoors. In theory, many of us could go years without directly touching the earth at all, even if we’re outside. Are you one of those people who always sleeps much better when they have been lying on the beach? earthing could be the reason why.

Treat yourself to things you enjoy this Summer, and try my earthing tip. Take your shoes off and stand on the grass, you will feel much happier for it.
